During my quiet times in New Zealand, I’d often ask myself, what makes me ‘me’. What sets me apart from others? What makes me different or unique in a way?
And during those quiet times, I’d also reflect on the things that I have been through, all the struggles, the obstacles, the hardships, the break downs, the let downs, these are all the things that shaped me to be who I am today.
For me, what makes me a modern Filipina is my ability to keep up with change. Months ago my whole world turned upside down, it seemed like everything changed drastically and I had no one or nothing else to hold onto but myself.
I am a modern Filipina, who aims for gender equality, neglecting the traditional gender roles of this society, I no longer believe that in order to keep a man, a woman must be submissive. Been there, done that. And nope, it’s not for me. I learned that I can be a good partner, while being unstoppable, reaching for my dreams and attaining my own personal goals. I aim for personal growth and I won’t let anyone hinder me from achieving personal success. I will make my own mark in this world, as me. Nothing more, nothing less.
Aside from learning how to handle myself in the worst situations, I’ve also learned how to cope with the society’s expectation that a Filipina should act a certain way. The most common remark “Kababae mong tao” that I always receive from family and relatives when they see my tattoos, my bright purple hair, whenever I talk too loudly or sit improperly is just one of the many reasons why I want to break the mold.
Defining myself as a modern Filipina, I began with speaking my mind freely, in a polite but also justified manner, even when sometimes, in doing so, people would perceive me as being tactless. I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by close to and middle aged women, who are indefinitely inspiring, and whom I can share encouraging and mentally stimulating conversations with. I guess, my downfall was truly a blessing after all, because I am now confident enough to make firm and bold decisions in all aspects of my life, I am able to follow my intuition more, to make the choices that resonates with my individuality, and I have also learned that sometimes, you have to let things naturally unfold for you, but you gotta work for what you want as well.
